Summary

The past ten years have witnessed significant progress in both the scientific basis and clinical practice of renal medicine. Recent advances range from the elucidation of the molecular etiology of certain primary renal diseases, to the routine use of recombinant human erythropoietin for the treatment of the anemia of renal failure. Despite such progress, many important questions remain unanswered, for example, how adequate is the current provision of renal replacement therapy? Are recent trends towards high flux, short duration, hemodialysis justifiable by risk -benefit analysis? This book debates these and other wide-ranging issues.
