World Bank Research Program
Summary
World Bank research is intended to enhance the understanding of poverty, improve the design of Bank-financed interventions and projects, increase the effectiveness of aid, and to support the capacity to undertake policy-oriented research in developing and transition economies. This volume is the annual compendium of World Bank research projects initiated, under way, or completed between 1 July 1999 and 30 June 2000. The abstracts presented describe, for each project, the questions addressed, the analytical methods used, the findings to date, and any policy implications. Abstracts also give research team contact details and identify any reports or publication produced by projects. The abstracts cover 173 research projects from throughout the World Bank, grouped under nine major headings: poverty and social welfare; education and labour markets; environmentally sustainable development; infrastructure and urban development; macroeconomics; international economics and trade; domestic finance and capital markets; and private sector development and public sector management.
